When a catastrophic injury occurs, families are often asked to make complex medical and legal decisions quickly — often before they fully understand the situation they are facing.
This service is designed to provide clarity, orientation, and steady guidance during that early period, without pressure or obligation.
How It Works
Step 1: A Confidential Initial Conversation
The process begins with a brief, confidential conversation focused on understanding your situation at a high level.
This initial conversation is offered at no cost and is intended to:
understand what has happened
identify where you are in the medical or recovery process
clarify what feels most uncertain or overwhelming
determine whether this service may be helpful
This conversation is not a medical evaluation or a legal consultation. No medical or legal advice is provided, and no professional relationship is formed at this stage.
Step 2: Determining the Right Path
After the initial conversation, one of several paths may be appropriate.
Some families primarily need:
Medical navigation, to better understand the healthcare system and next steps
Legal navigation, to understand whether legal guidance may be appropriate
Both, at different points in time
Neither, if another form of support is more appropriate
Not every situation is the right fit for this service, and that determination is made transparently and without obligation.
Step 3: Medical Navigation (When Appropriate)
For families seeking help understanding the medical landscape after catastrophic injury, medical navigation may be offered.
Medical navigation is an education-focused service that may help families:
understand different care settings and transitions
identify what types of medical expertise may be relevant
clarify roles within the care team
prepare for important medical conversations
distinguish between decisions that are time-sensitive and those that can wait
Medical navigation does not include medical care, diagnosis, treatment, or medical advice. No physician–patient relationship is formed.
In some situations, families may choose to schedule a longer navigation session for more in-depth discussion. Any associated fee is discussed in advance.
Step 4: Legal Navigation and Referrals (When Requested)
Some families have questions about whether legal guidance may be appropriate after catastrophic injury.
Legal navigation is an education-focused and referral-based service intended to help families:
understand when legal guidance may be relevant
learn what experience matters in complex injury cases
avoid common early missteps
identify appropriate legal counsel, if requested
Legal navigation does not include legal advice, case evaluation, or representation. No attorney–client relationship is formed.
Where permitted by law, referrals to experienced attorneys may be made with full transparency and informed client consent.
Step 5: Thoughtful Referrals (If Appropriate)
When referrals are requested and appropriate, they are made carefully and deliberately.
Referrals are:
based on experience and professional judgment
not tied to urgency or volume
never obligatory
Families are encouraged to take the time they need to decide what feels right for their situation.
What This Service Is — and Is Not
This service is intentionally limited in scope.
It is:
education-focused and independent
designed to reduce confusion and pressure
centered on clarity and thoughtful next steps
It is not:
medical care or medical advice
legal advice or legal representation
a substitute for treating clinicians or retained counsel
No physician–patient or attorney–client relationship is formed through this service.
Transparency and Professional Boundaries
Anna Elmers, MD, JD, is licensed to practice law in the State of California only.
This practice is not affiliated with any hospital system, medical practice, or law firm.
Where permitted by law, attorney referral fees may be received with full written disclosure and informed client consent. The total legal fee paid by a client is not increased as a result of any referral.
A Steady Approach
Families who reach out are often navigating shock, fatigue, and uncertainty. Conversations are approached with care, respect, and an understanding of how difficult these moments can be.
The goal is not urgency or outcomes, but clarity, context, and calm guidance.
